Making A Zip Line For Your Dog

Keeping our dog safe, and abiding by the rules of many of the places we visit, means that Myles spend a lot of time on-leash. Though we’re always exploring new places, life at the end of a six foot tether doesn’t provide him with much freedom. So, to give Myles more room to wander while we’re camping, we made an inexpensive zip line for our dog!

Zip Line vs. Tie-Out

The zip line has a lot of advantages over cable tie-outs, which people often use to keep dogs from wandering off.

First, jumping up every two minutes to untangle your dog doesn’t happen with a zip line. If you have a dog who’s constantly wrapping his tie-out around the picnic table, tent stake, trees, and your chair, you know how impossible it is to relax with those shenanigans going on!

Second, you’ll never again feel the dread of watching your dog bolt to the end of their unforgiving cable tie-out. The zip line has more give and protects pets from injury.

Third, the zip-line won’t trip you when you’re stumbling around the campfire in the dark!

Materials and Assembly

All you’ll need to make a zip line for your dog is some nylon rope and two spring clasps. Any hardware store will have these materials, or you can order them online for about fifteen dollars.

We chose a rope with a smooth cover, which makes it comfortable to handle when we’re putting it up and taking it down. It also has a bit of stretch for some shock absorbency to protect Myles from a sudden stop.

Rod used his Eagle Scout skills to handle the knot tying. He made quick work of the two bowline knots, attaching the spring clasps to the ends of rope.

Melting the fibers by passing the raw ends of the rope though a flame keeps them from unraveling. And – SHAZAM – the zip line is ready for action!

Deciding On Length

The most difficult part of making your zip line will be deciding how long it should be.

We decided on a 50 foot line, which gives Myles plenty of room to explore. And because having too much is better than not enough.

That length also gives us more flexibility if we’re at a campsite with few anchor points. If we don’t have trees, we can attach one end to the ladder on the back of our motorhome and the other to a picnic table or post.

Setting Up The Zip Line

Before setting up your dog’s zip line at a park or campground, check the rules to verify that they allow the rope to be wrapped around the trees. Also, placing a 1 to 2 inch webbing between the tree and the rope will help protect trees with soft bark. Nails and screws should not be attached to the tree when putting up your zip line.

It takes about five minutes to set up our zip line. In the photo below, we’ve wrapped one end of the rope around a tree and clipped the spring clasp on to the rope. Then, keeping the rope taught, we ran the rope to another tree, going around the tree as many times as necessary to take up the slack before clipping the spring clasp back to the rope.

The rope is placed high enough to just give Myles the ability to lie down comfortably. Giving him just enough leeway keeps him from building up too much velocity and jerking at the end of his leash if he decides to chase a gofer or give a squirrel a run for his money.

We also use the dog zip line when our campsites have a ramada. It’s easy to wrap the line around two posts and snap the ends back on the rope.

One Zip Line For Two Dogs

When we still had Ty and Buster, we made separate runs for each dog on the zip line.

We’d wrap the rope around the first tree and clip the spring clasp back to the rope. Then we’d make a complete pass around a second tree, creating the first section of zip line where Ty’s attached in the photo below. Then we’d wrap the rope around a third tree and clip the spring clasp back to the rope. That created the second run of zip line where Buster is attached in the photo below. Giving the boys their own space kept them from getting tangled around each other!

Connecting Dogs A Zip Line

Pets should never be attached to a zip line by their collar, because it could choke them if they became tangled. When he’s on the zip line, Myles wears his harness, which has a loop on the back to connect the leash. The final step is to slip a heavy-weight carabiner through the leash handle and snap it on the line.

What’s “heavy-duty” enough for your carabiners? It depends on your dog! Mass times velocity = force. So, if you have a 50-pound dog and he can accelerate to 5 mph on the zip line, a caribiner rated for 250 pounds should be sufficient. Again, it’s best to err on the side of safety.

Place your pup’s water bowl within easy reach and you’re done! Just remember never to leave your pal unattended on the zip line.

In Hot Water About Your Dog? Climb Out With This Advice

Anyone can go out and get a dog and bring him home. However, if you wish to properly care for your dog, you must know what you’re doing. Pay attention to the following helpful advice so that you can make sure your dog has everything it needs in order to live and long and healthy life.

Groom your dog regularly. A dog requires constant grooming to keep his coat in tip top condition. Make sure that your dog is completely relaxed before you start the grooming session; this is especially important if he is excitable. Keep the session quite short (5 to 10 minutes at most) until he is comfortable with the idea of being groomed. Most importantly – be sure to praise him and offer a treat after a successful grooming session!

Be wary when it comes to flea treatments. Many have ingredients that are dangerous to kids. Discuss any concerns with your veterinarian, and see if he has more holistic treatment options that might help to keep your pet free from fleas and your family safe.

You need to ask your vet to make sure the food you are feeding them is good. Following his advice on the different foods for different stages of your dog’s life can avoid sickness and stomach upset. Never give your dog any food you are not sure of.

Give your dog rawhide instead of real meat bones. Pieces can break off of the real bone, which may cause your dog to choke. Rawhide is completely healthy and improves the teeth, and therefore is preferable to animal bones.

Teach your dog to be trained, even if you don’t plan on devoting a lot of time to special tricks. A dog needs to understand the basic hierarchy of the home and should be prepared to listen and learn throughout his life. Practice the basics like “sit” and “down” in the beginning and introduce something new every once in a while.

Make sure that you trim your dog’s nails on a fairly regular basis. You do not want them to get too long since it will make it uncomfortable for them to walk and they may develop health issues. They should be at a length that just about touches the ground.

Take the time to train your dog on a leash. Keep your dog at your side when you are taking a walk. Having a dog that can properly walk on a leash will be more enjoyable for both you and your pup. Your dog needs to get used to this.

If your vet gives you special instructions for your dog’s care, follow them to the letter. The dog may hate that cone on its head, but it’s there for a very good reason! It is always best to follow the recommendations shared by your veterinarian.

If you breed your dog, do so responsibly. The AKC advises all owners of pure-bred dogs to make an effort to advance the breed and discard all other motivations, such as money or experimentation. Consider the repercussions of your actions before allowing your dog to mate and create a litter of puppies.

If you are training your dog, make sure the treat you are giving him really is desirable. Pets have preferences too, and if your dog does not like the treat you are providing, there is not going to be much motivation to do the right thing. Try out a few different brands, and remember that soft, chewy treats are generally the most well-received.

The kind of leash you use when walking your dog is very important. A small leash that would fit a small dog, like a chihuahua, is not going to fit a Rottweiler or pit bull. Get a leash that will fit your dog comfortably but also provided them with safety.

If you are not sure how your dog will react to other dogs, make sure you keep them on a leash during the first introduction. Rescue dogs especially can be unpredictable around other dogs. Keeping your dog on the leash will allow you to better control their behavior. Once you feel comfortable and your dog is adjusted, you can take them off the leash and let them play.

In order to potty train a puppy, it is of utmost importance to take the dog outside frequently. Doing this will familiarize your puppy with the association between outside and going to the bathroom. Failure to do this will result in a harder time breaking your new family member of his/ her bad habits.

Never give your dog away for free, no matter how desperate you might feel to get rid of it quickly. Even if you can not care for the animal, it is still your responsibility to be sure that it will have a good life to come. Instead, take the time to investigate the person that you will give it to and charge a re-homing fee to ensure that they are serious about caring for the animal.

Never leave your dog inside your vehicle. Remember that your dog needs supervision and that it could become dehydrated very quickly, especially during the hot summer months. It is best to leave your dog at home for a few hours if you have to go somewhere and cannot take your dog inside.

Your canine friend needs to be cleaned regularly. Though dogs do not require daily bathing, it is important to clean them weekly. This will help to prevent any skin issues, and will keep your home clean as well.

You have to keep your dog clean, like you clean yourself. While your dog will not need a bath every day, you do want to be sure to give it a good cleaning at least once a week. Also, this will help prevent skin issues from forming on your dog.

While humans may judge us, a dog never will. He will continually love you, even when you neglect his best interests. That said, you have read this article because you never wish to do anything which harms him, so use these tips every day and make his life as joyous as he makes yours.

We’ll Answer All The Dog-related Questions You Might Have

Dogs are a very fun pet to have around the house. They’re loving, affectionate creatures. However, to benefit both you and your dog, it would be to your advantage to know everything you can about them. Here are the basics in learning to understand and care for your dog.

Always give your dog plenty of attention and affection. When your dog behaves properly, make sure you let the dog know you are happy and give them some affection. This will help reinforce the good behavior and the dog will try to behave in this manner for the positive attention..

If you’re taking your dog on a trip, be sure that you have a recent picture of them on-hand. If the worst happens and your pet gets lost, you have a current picture that you can show others or use to make “lost” posters.

Hot summer days are harder for dogs to handle than humans. Always make sure your pet has enough water to drink. Provide them with a shaded area to rest if they are going to be outside for any length of time. And, if your dog begins acting in an unusual manner, call the veterinarian. Heatstroke could be fatal, so it is important to get medical care as soon as possible.

When choosing a dog for your home, don’t forget to estimate the size it will be as a full grown adult. This is especially true if you have small children at home. Although a small puppy will be cute, it may grow into a large, one hundred pound dog. Do some research on the average adult size of the breeds you are considering.

Keep the nails on your dog trimmed. If the dog’s nails curl under, your dog might be in pain. Buy some clippers and do the job yourself. If your dog does not respond well when you try to trim the nails, a groomer or even your veterinarian can handle the task.

Your dog deserves to have quality dog food. Many of the cheapest brands contain additives, preservatives and other things that can compromise the health of your dog. Find a list of recommended dog foods from the vet or an advocate for animals. This will be very helpful to your dog’s health.

Keep trimming the soft hair near the paws of your dog to keep it from matting. Straighten the hair with a comb slightly before you do any trimming. A professional groomer may be a good solution if you are confident about trimming the hair yourself.

If your dog has been playing outside, take the time to inspect its ears and neck for ticks. These parasites are very common and could make your dog sick if you do not take action right away. Take your dog to the vet if you do not know how to remove the ticks yourself.

Use positive reinforcement to teach your dog the habits that you would like to see from them. For example, if you notice that your dog barks anytime someone enters your home you could reward him for not barking with a treat. The dog will then associate being quite with the reward that he will receive.

Make sure there is one policy in your home for giving your dog table scraps. While some owners do not give their dog any table food at all, yet others wait until the family meal is done. When you are training your dog, don’t have too many people telling your dog what to do. Everyone has their own methods, and experiencing a number of them can leave your pooch confused. You should have one person take charge of the training procedure, and then ask everyone else to follow their lead once the dog has learned a few simple commands. This allows for consistency that is least likely to confuse your pet.

You need to invest in a quality collar and ID tag with your address on it. Choose a robust collar that is adapted to the size of your dog. You should be able to easily fit two fingers inside the collar. Do not forget to update the ID tag if you get a new phone number.

When you first start training, play with different reward systems. You will quickly notice that some rewards are more appreciated than others. If they are food-driven, reward them with items like little hot dogs. If play is what he wants, choose one favorite toy to play with him with as a reward. Some dogs just like to be shown attention as a reward.

Always be the boss with your dog. A dog is not only much more apt to be obedient when you are in command, he’ll also be much happier. Dogs need to know what’s expected of them and that they are being led. This gives them a sense of security and you a more peaceful household.

If you have younger children in your home, a dog crate or dog area in your house may be a good idea. With younger children running around all day, your dog may become stressed out and want a safe place to go relax. A crate can provide your dog with a dog only area where it can take a break from a hectic day.

If you have a dog, it is important that you see the vet for a routine check up at least twice a year. Doing so verifies the good health of your beloved family member. If a problem is caught, it is more likely to be less detrimental if caught sooner than later.

If you have kids, then you probably know how important schedules are. Dogs are the same way. Without knowing what to expect during the day, your pet is likely to become cranky or mean-tempered. How they feel will affect how they behave. That’s why it’s important to provide proper training, playtime and nutrition.
