Australian comedian Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann has won praise for an impassioned on-air speech defending the rights of asylum seekers.

The broadcaster got fired up on Thursday night’s episode of The Project following recent reports more than 150 Tamil asylum seekers have been returned to Sri Lanka after being intercepted at sea by Australian authorities.

“It is absolutely disgusting,” Lehmo said.

“The whack our reputation is copping initially is horrific.”

“It is embarrassing and it is disgusting that our government does this.”

Many viewers welcomed the comedian’s impassioned comments on the issue.

“Great to see (Lehmo) passionately defending people’s right to seek Aus’s protection. Serious rights abuses in #SriLanka,” The Human Rights Law Centre tweeted.

“Lemo (sic) you star!” Elaine Hosking wrote on the show’s Facebook page.

“Thank goodness someone had the guts to say what we all were waiting for about the asylum seeker issue,” Hosking added.

However some questioned why the usually light-hearted panellist was weighing travel in sri lanka on such a serious subject.

“Your (sic) supposed to be the average comic relief,” one viewer tweeted.

Lehmann has thanked his fans for their “overwhelming support” regarding his comments on the issue.

“It seems a lot of people do care!” he tweeted on Thursday night.

The Abbott government has refused to confirm reports that two boats have been intercepted.
